Elm wood is type of wood which appeared in the Miocene geological period about 20 million years ago, originating in what is now central Asia. Elm wood was valued for its strength and interlocking grain and consequent resistance to splitting. Elm wood is also resistant to decay when permanently wet, making it the perfect material for furniture.
We also love our reclaimed wood. They are processed wood rescued from old barns, factories and warehouses and are popular for many reasons: the wood’s unique appearance, its contribution to “Green design” the history of the wood’s origins and their physical characteristics as being strong, stable and durable. The increased strength of reclaimed wood is often attributed to the lack of air pollution that existed up until the 20th century as well as to the wood’s often having been harvested from virgin growth timber, which had hundreds of years to grow before human intervention.
